JUANITA DRAMA, TROUPE 3422, competed in the STATE Thespy Competition on January 10th, 2026. The results are in and Juanita Drama Troupe 3422 brought home 51 National and State Rankings in 13 different categories!
We ranked in every category entered: Lighting, Sound, Costume Design, Costume Construction, Theatre Marketing, Scenic Design, Contrasting Monologues, Monologues, Group Scene, Solo Song, Duet Song, Group Musical, Playwriting and Short Film.
We begin working on Thespys in September. You can imagine the work that goes into the performance pieces, but I thought I would share how areas like costume design are presented. The technical entries require the same binder of artifacts that professionals use when submitting a design portfolio and proposal for, say, a costume design position at Seattle Rep. Students are then given 8 minutes to present their designs, followed by a 4-minute Q/A. It is TOUGH to get a ranking! I am proud of all of the Juanita students (ranked or not ranked) who put themselves out there at Thespys, but I am especially impressed by the creativity, dedication and the sheer hours of work from our technical theatre students as they work one-on-one with me, in small groups, and on their own to prepare their designs.
The competition is State-wide, rigorous and requires a deep commitment from students to achieve these rankings. Each event is adjudicated by three theatre professionals that are experts in the categories that they are scoring.
