NOTES FOR NOVEMBER 11, 2019
OPENING WEEK!!
This is a very special week, with a very special play, in a very special place, with very special people. We begin a long, long run of memorable productions for the new Performing Arts Center at Juanita High School. For decades to come Juanita Drama will be putting on productions in this place, but we are the first. History in the making!
There is a lot to be said about the word ensemble. It encompasses everything that is good and right about artistic collaboration. SKM is a product of ensemble work. Everyone who has been a part of SKM will find a piece of themselves in the show. Congratulations on all you have done and will do over the next few weeks to bring SKM to life on the Juanita stage.
Work hard. Be strong and creative and aware. Listen closely to what your director tells you. Pay attention to all of the details. Everything you know and will learn over the next couple of weeks will propel our show to a place you didn't know existed.
For my seniors: You know how good this gets. Shine on! And share your glow with all of our sweet 'noobs' because they are about to become the next generation of Juanita Drama with the knowledge of how powerful all of this is for the individual and the group.
Make SURE all of you respond to the Monday Letter by Sunday night!!
Hugs,
Mac

NOTES FOR NOVEMBER 4, 2019
Hello SKM Company! We have an amazing show - so many cool details to pull together this week! AND we need to get people in those seats to experience She Kills Monsters! What can you do to help with that?
MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT IS COMING IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS! Lots of fun times coming up including:
Greet the Buses on Thursday, Nov 14, we pass out candy and wave signs as the buses arrive - ALL Drama is expected to be there for this - if you are on a bus just hop off and join the group!!
We are at the point in the play where everything is rapidly coming into focus - including our lighting and sound! It would surprise everyone the amount of hours put into parts of a production you do not see.
CAST: you need to be prepared on Monday to be performing at your highest level, with all words and actions strongly articulated. We will bringing in the sound cues, and they are specific to the words as written in the script. So make sure you are doing your job and be there for us as we bring in a very dynamic soundscape into the show!
The Costume build for the show is looking good, though the details (socks, leggings, belts, shorts, etc) that you are responsible for need to be finished. A note about deadlines: they are absolute in Theatre. Whatever you are responsible for needs to be taken care of. Please bring in on Monday what you forgot on Saturday, show it to me, and store it with your costume. Unless I hear otherwise directly from you I will check off that your costume is complete and ready to go by Wednesday of this week.
-Monsters: I am taking care of your Bugbear heads - make sure you have dark socks, and make sure you are prepared to go barefoot on stage for the Wraith scene this week.
-ALL CAST: Please wear your show shoes starting on Thursday.
-Orcus: Bring what you have on Monday - we will work on your costume during 7th.
-Tilly: You need your cape on your costume chart - make sure you add that, ask me which one, and where it is stored for show
-Agnes: Switch to white shoes with cheer, navy with 2nd change. We need a warm-up jacket . . .
-Vera: I have a jacket and hat for you.
ALL CAST: Make up sketches need to be brought to rehearsal on Monday. These sketches should articulate your ideas for your makeup. You will be meeting in groups throughout the week to make sure you are all set for Saturday's Dress Rehearsal. Please see the file at the top of this letter for more info about Makeup and Hair!

NOTES FOR OCTOBER 28, 2019
Hello SKM Company! We are a few weeks away from opening! So many good things are happening everywhere to make our show come to life! Here are some reminders to help make this week awesome for all of us:
1. Check the calendar carefully. There are daily changes based on the significant absences we have experienced the past two weeks. I gave out pages we will be following, but there will also be full cast work each day to get us back on track schedule-wise.
2. Monday is the hard deadline for memorization of all blocking, props use, line work, and backstage patterns that have been planned and worked on. In other words you need to confidently 'know your stuff' as you walk into rehearsal on Monday. Please use your time well to warm up scenes before they get to the stage.
3. This week we will be working on transitions and a tighter understanding of how the themes of the show are exposed through the character relationships, as well as timing for special effects.
4. If you missed rehearsals make sure you know the blocking with the platform so you don't slow the scene down (I will help you with the nuances of using the platform).
5. If you have a commitment to bring in a prop (a walkman for example) or a costume piece (or have a great idea to share) make sure it arrives on Monday.
Attendance: It is so very important that everyone is in rehearsal. Please make sure you have gone over your calendar carefully with your parents so that there are no misunderstandings. Emergencies or illness are the only reasons to miss a rehearsal. We need to be able to count on everyone for the remainder of the production calendar.
Booth: You are working with me on this day! Natalie and Trixie: we will talk for a few minutes on Monday to make sure we all understand what is happening on Wednesday.
Costuming: On Wednesday you will work in teams with the Monsters to detail out their opening costume with the goal that the opening costume is finished by the end of your work time! Also: wraith update on that day! And (ta-da) Bugbear paws have arrived!
Props: On Wednesday you will be working on props for the special effects in the show.
Dramaturg: I will meet with Emeline to outline your work.

NOTES FOR OCTOBER 21, 2019
Hello SKM Company! What an amazingly productive week we just had. I am so proud of the tech work you are all doing as we take this show from page to stage. Very cool designs for the Gelatinous Cube, and excellent research notes on makeup and hair from costuming. The Dramaturg group is doing important work - you are about to get a new, very fun element to work on. It's been rewarding to work on sound with classes and the booth team. I am very proud of our cast for the drop script week. We were able to get off book AND evolve the show:). Yay!
Combat: we are only as good as the practice you put in to the work. Review your handout (B.L.O.O.D), and spend time checking posturing, stances and grips in front of a mirror, and running through your routines.
Check this week's calendar carefully. Monsters are in rehearsal this week on Monday, Tuesday and for costuming on Wednesday from 1:15 - 2:45.
Have a prop or costume piece you needed to bring in? Do it on MONDAY, please.
Monday is PROP SHOP, which means that beginning on that day all props are represented in the show. No 'air' props. If you have a manual and a letter make sure there is something that represents the manual and the letter. Same size, shape, weight. Question? Just ask me on your ML Response!
And just another reminder: make SURE you get your $10 to the Bookkeeper and a receipt to Mac by Tuesday!!
AFTER SCHOOL CALENDAR for October 21 - 25, 2019
--Reminder that Production Team means ALL TECH.

NOTES FOR OCTOBER 14, 2019
Hello SKM Company! So many things to be thinking about. Make sure you are keeping good notes, staying organized, getting your homework done, eating well, sleeping, communicating with parents, laughing hard every day! It takes a lot to keep yourself healthy and strong. The trick for a nicely paced, successful production period is one day at a time, and when you drift off to sleep each night be very proud of all you are doing, because you are awesome!
This week is Community Poster Day. Please be on time in 526 ready to go. Bring a snack or money to buy something while you are out. You will return to Juanita by 5pm. If you are being picked up earlier just make sure the rest of your poster team is aware of where and when you are being picked up.
DROP Script is THIS WEEK! Work hard to be comfortable with your lines. If you are having problems talk with me and I will help you. This is the struggle week, so don't worry or give up! If you are in 6th or 7th and have cast roles you have class time to work on lines this week.
COSTUMES/HAIR/MAKEUP/PROPS for each character change - make sure you have clear notes, sketches, research: We will be having discussions all week long about what your look is and how it will be achieved, what each final prop will be. Do you have anything that you think might help with costumes/props? BRING WHATEVER YOU HAVE IN ON MONDAY! You can bring it to my office first thing in the morning. Ask Ms. Pischke to let you in! Make a list of what you bring so the PA's can check with you.
I want to have a beautifully rendered sketch of your final 'LOOK' for each of your changes - remind me to tell you why!
Looking forward to a great week as we do a deep dive into She Kills Monsters! Hugs, Mac

NOTES FOR OCTOBER 7, 2019 (Mystery photo above. do you know what this is?)
ALL COMPANY: On Wednesday, Oct 9, you will be grouped into tech/cast design teams to work specifically on Costuming and Props. Please make sure you have done your research, and have your notes. Tech should have notes that developed during your costume/prop/dramaturg meetings last week. Cast should have sketches and descriptions on what they think their costumes and props should look like. This production meeting is for ALL TECH and ALL CAST, from 1:15 - 2:30, Oct 9.
Booth: You will begin discussions on lighting and sound. Please make sure you re-read the script, marking anywhere that there are specific lighting or sound cues indicated.
Cast Rehearsal Clothing: everyone should be in lightweight easy to move in laced up shoes. Short sleeve tshirts (show shirts from past shows are perfect for this - they inspire me as I work with you!). You will NOT be allowed on stage in boots or heavy footwear. It is dangerous for you and for others (my toes can attest to this) at this point in rehearsal.
Stage Combat: ALL cast members are expected to know the physical combat routine (phrase) that was taught during the stage combat workshop on Saturday. You need to know this BEFORE rehearsal on Monday. A few of you weren't there so please ask someone at the workshop who feels they are proficient in the phrase to teach you both A and B. If you were at the workshop put the handout you received INTO your drama binder. You will need it on Monday.
EVERYONE needs to watch these videos. CAST is expected to KNOW and be able to DO what the videos are teaching.
The first is a straight forward explanation of combat in D&D (Theatre of the Mind!). Watch it more than once, and note the visual posturing of the characters, variety of weapons, details on clothing, mood-building atmospheres. For everyone portraying characters inside the D&D world these visuals are a valuable resource.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tnrATiclg4: D&D5E Explained
The next three videos use a rapier BUT the ideas will be used in our combat. You need to understand the cut and point targets, cut and point grips, and practice the lunge attack.

Looking forward to slaying or being slayed this week! Hugs, Mac

We begin rehearsals and production meetings for She Kills Monsters this week! You should only attend on the days you are called. Check your yellow calendar and match it to what is posted on the Monday letter each week just in case there are changes (none this week). It is very important that you are communicating your schedule to your parents, and making sure of your transportation. Here are guidelines to get you happily and safely through the week:
- 1. IF YOU ARE SCHEDULED for a meeting or rehearsal then check in on the sheets posted just before you get to 526 on the classroom side. You will TIME IN and then TIME OUT when you are about to leave for the day. This is REQUIRED.
- 2. Make sure you bring a snack and water for after school if you have an extended day (Tech on Wed, for example, will have just had lunch so you won't need a snack).
- 3. You do not need a bathroom pass after school, however you need to sign in and out on the clipboard at the back of the Theatre. Go through the main doors to the 2nd floor bathroom, return through those same doors, and then sign back in when you return. Make sure someone knows you are going. Whoever you tell should expect you back within 5 minutes or let on of the Leadership students know. We will talk about emergencies and emergency exits again this week.
- 4. Dress very warmly for after school with layers you can remove as needed.
- 5. Cast will have home bases for homework, and you are expected to be in those seats working on your homework when you are not actively in rehearsal or a meeting. Make sure you bring homework, a book.
- 6. Please let your parents know that you will be ready 5 minutes after the call time has ended. You need a few minutes to pack up and sign out. Have your parents pick you up by 526 so you can just pop out the door and into a car.
- 7. Student drivers can bring cars around to the back of the Theatre after school is out if you have time after school or during a break. You are allowed to park in the faculty lot once school is out. For sure do this on Saturday calls!
- 8. No phones will be out during rehearsals or meetings unless they are being used as research tools or rehearsal tapes. We will talk about what the plan will be if you are expecting something from your parents or if you need to make an emergency call out.
- 9. I expect everyone in Drama to not only stay up with homework and grades, but to be leaders in your classrooms and in the hallways at Juanita. No one is to ever use Drama as an excuse to not get your work done. Use your time well. You have made a significant commitment to our group, and you staying on top of homework is a big part of that. Also, of course all those other things we talk about like sleep, eating well, drinking water, smiling a lot, communicating with your families! I have great faith in all of you, and the interesting thing is that students tend to be better organized and do better with their grades when they are involved in a play production:).
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE:
CAST: You will be receiving a text that shows what page numbers corresponds to which Rehearsal Part (1-5). Please let me know if you did not receive this text.
